These are the carbs off my 1967.5 Datsun Roadster after a visit to Paltech Technologies. When i sent them to Jeff Palya (owner/operator), they were in such poor shape, they looked like they couldn't be saved. Between the micro polishing, re-plating, rebuilding and replacement of necessary parts, these are now better than new. Thank you Jeff, well worth the money, and the few weeks turn around.

Today there was a tragedy in Rialto, Ca. A veteran bus driver, identified as 48-year-old Lawrence Kester of Fontana was stabbed to death by a distraught passenger. Kester had worked for the company for 15 years and had earned more than a dozen commendations for safety and customer service, a husband and father of six that I'm sure will be dearly missed. Ed Laskos from Fox 11 news reported this story tonight, and I've got to say, he's a total asshole. They showed a picture of the bus driver taken at his 12 year wedding anniversary, and Ed Lascos said "Take a look at this, it will break your heart." At that point, your not delivering the news, you're just being a dick, trying to make an impact for self preservation. Fuck you Ed Lascos, you're a piece of shit.

I was on my way today to have lunch in my usual spot, when this caught my eye from half a block away. I decided to sit down and spend my lunch break staring at what can only be described as a "Dream Car", well, for me anyways. It's a Pontiac GTO Royal Bobcat. You can tell the owner loves this car because he has done a great job with it. He was sitting nearby and was nice enough to pop the hood for me. Yep, A 360hp Tri-Power, clean enough to eat off of. The only thing missing is the hood scoop trim, but don't worry, its only off getting chrome.

El Cheapo

"El Cheapo" is the name of this scoot i believe. This is the bike that sparked the desire to build a bike of my own. I saw El Cheapo years ago while perusing the web for things I couldn't afford. I never knew who built it, and i wouldn't say it's my favorite bike, but it looked cool as hell at the time, and I thought "I can build one of those". I just randomly ran across it again and figured out what about it that inspired me to build one. It's the name, "El Cheapo". A cool little scoot with a very deceitful name. I'm not sure at this point how much I've spent on bikes, and I don't really care. What I do know is it aint cheap, but it sure is fun. That's a fair trade as far as I can see. Maybe I'll name my next build "El Expensivo", so just in case it inspires someone to build a scoot, at least they'll know what they're getting into.

When i look at an old lid, i imagine what they could have gone through in their lifetime. How many races have they won, how many mounds have they jumped? Maybe it was a dads insurance that his hellion child might make it back home in one piece at the end of a long day of him and his friends trying to jump the creek on their minibikes. Whatever the case may be, they've seen their fair share of shit. This is a well used bell i found a while back, and i picked it up because of the sticker on the side. "Superbike 100, Daytona 1980". I imagine this lid had some fun.

I'm one of those people that are constantly seeking "the best" whatever, food wise. Burgers are at the top of the list with steaks, and i found what i believe to be the best burger ever. Umami on La Brea in Hollywood serves the Hatch burger, and it is outstanding. I tried to make one at home, and although it was really good, it still didn't compare to the "Hatch".

Semi Split Rockers, Internal Exile Throttle, Reverse Bar End Clutch Lever, cv carb, Custom Paint... good motor, but leaks oil as all ironheads do. needs rocker box gaskets and rocker box seals replaced. i just pulled out the points and put in an electronic dynatek 2000i ultima ignition, but i havnt gotten it going yet. it will need to be finished by someone that knows electronic ignitions. Don't Be Scared, DIY Paint Job!

This was the first thing i've ever painted. At the time, i didn't have the money to send my tins out for paint, so i just did it myself. The good thing about paint is, if you screw it up, it comes off and you can do it again. I put together a DIY for inspiration, but please don't blame me if you F it all up, just strip it and start over. Go to "read more" for the full DIY.

Right now is not the time to be spending a ton of dough, so after thinking a lot about it, i decided to save some money and paint my tins myself. I took a trip to my local paint store and picked up some HOK supplies, and got to work. This is my first time picking up a spray gun by the way.

doing the bodywork wasn't too painful. the welds were good, and the tank was fairly straight, even after all the cutting and welding. I used 2K high build rattle can primer as suggested by sure. its about $15 per can, and i used an entire can for both the tank and the fender.

i dug out my old easy-up tent that was about to be tossed in the trash, put up some painters plastic, and used paper drop cloth for the floor. cut a hole in one side of the plastic and duct taped an air conditioning filter over it, and did the same on the opposite wall with a floor fan. about $30 in plastic and a $3 filter.

i took a trip to Rays Auto Paint, and spent $150 on black base, clear, hardener, reducer, a few filters, and some tape.

now, i know that a really nice gun is well worth the money you spend on it, but i used a gun my dad picked up on sale at northern tool last year for under $20. it came with a 1.4 tip, and since i dont know the difference between this and a pricey pro model, i'd say this was the perfect tool for my budget paint job. the compressor i used is a small home garage model, nothing special.

laid down a base that i mixed at 1:1 paint/reducer. i only mixed enough to fill my hopper half full, and that was too much. i wouldnt mix too much at a time because you'll end up having to dump it. i keep all of my unused or old chemicals until the mobile chem recycler comes to my neck of the woods. they're always happy to take it, and it keeps it out of the gutter.

i only ended up using the 1/4 plastic tape for my lines. i still may use the 1/8 stuff when i start the graphic work.

this was the coolest part. the clear mixes at 4:1 with the hardener, and the flake can be as heavy or as light as you want, depending on how much you add in. for half a hopper of the clearcoat/hardener, i added about 3 teaspoons of the flake, and it came out nice and heavy. its the small size flake, and they recommend a 1.5 tip, but my 1.4 worked just fine.

This ended up being a 2 day job, but im sure it could have been quicker if i wasnt drinking beer with my brother all day while trying to get this done, but wheres the fun in that.
im going to wet-sand and re-apply the clear so i can get going with the graphics. i'll update with some pics in a few days.

**EDIT**

Today we wet sanded the clear coat with 1000 grit paper, cleaned the tank and applied a couple more layers of clear coat from about 6 inches away. these pix were taken after a couple hours of drying.

i got on the computer and made a stencil so i could get going on the scales...

i bought a bottle of gold auto/air-brush paint and a bottle of reducer. $14 total, and re-masked the tank so i dont muff it up with over spray.

this is where a good quality air-brush comes in handy. again, this was my first time picking up an air-brush, so i expected it to come out a little sloppy. it took a couple hours to do the tank and fender.

after the last clear coat...

The first bike i ever really built was a 1965 Norton Atlas. I bought it in stock form, stripped down to the frame, and started over. It eventually became a nice cafe racer, and along the way my son "T-Bone" would hang out with me and do a little wrenching. Years later i got him into minibikes, and that was lots of fun, and bruises. He now has a couple of dirtbikes, one of which is a Honda 150 CRF. I knew that he would eventually get into bikes because ive always had them, but starting him early helped to teach him about saftey and common sense, and also not to cry about your bike being broke, but instead to get outside and fix the damn thing yourself.

i got some mounts on the dt80 tank that im using on this build. this tank is a great fit for this bike. its got a 4 inch wide tunnel and gives plenty of room to hide a master cylinder for the front brake.
